A bit of context: In ~1880 brazil freed all of the slaves, meaning they had to make a huge effort to bring immigrants to brazil... especially europeans because they had all of that "whitening the people" idea. So people from countries that were struggling at the time (~1880-1900s), germany, japan, but mostly italy, came in huge waves to brazil to seek a better life. But yes, many of the guys from ww2 then used this previous fact to hide/escape, unfortunately. Some people still take advantage of brazil's diversity: the N. korean leader used a (fake)brazilian passport to travel incognito, since anyone can pass as an brazillian, etc.

As a former player, I can tell you that you're right, you don't see these hits coming. But if you've played for a long time and you're any good at it, you start to feel them coming...like a 6th sense. You also know that if you play in the middle of the field, if you're on offense you better learn to keep your head on a swivel. If not, then one of the "sharks" on defense , like me as a linebacker, will smell the blood in the water and go into a feeding frenzy... resulting in you going out for at least a play or two. As for tackling, no, you're not supposed to lead with your helmet. There's penalties for that. Also, it's for the person who's tackling safety, too. Leading with your helmet is poor technique and can leave you with a broken neck. So you're taught to ALWAYS look at what you're tackling. That lines up the spine better to protect your neck. You look at what you're tackling and ALWAYS run full speed...never "pull up". When you "pull up", that's when you get hurt.
